Diabetes In a Nutshell

Posted by tk in Uncategorized on 26-09-2009

I have a friend who has diabetes, and was recently chatting with him on the growth of the condition – what an amazing revelation! He informed me that several reports state that ten percent of US citizens are diabetic, and most of these poor people are unaware of the fact! Also, for many of these poor people, it might have been prevented.

I made my mind up to spread the word and help a few people.

Yep, it’s true, the most important cause of the growing diabetes epidemic is lack of knowledge.

If you believe that you might be at risk of getting diabetes, it is prudent to find out about the different types of diabetes, the symptoms of diabetes you should watch out for, what you can do to lower the damaging effects of diabetes, and what the main treatments for diabetes are. Also, if you are pregnant, you need to learn about the dangers of gestational diabetes mellitus, a form of diabetes which can affect as much as 1 in 4 pregnancies.

Diabetes mellitus is a unremitting condition, it cannot be cured today, and it can lead to very unpleasant adverse health problems.

The most effective approach to decrease the risk of contracting type two diabetes is to take on a healthy way of life.
If you keep to the advice detailed below, you will decrease the probability of contracting diabetes, and if you already have it, significantly lower the damage that it may do.

1. Nutrition.
I know it may seem obvious, but if you eat healthy foods then you will be safer than people who eat junk food.

Experts give advice to those in a high risk category that if they don t want to contract this disease they should:
i. Try to eat more fruit and vegetables principally those that are low in carbohydrates.
ii. Try to eat more foods like lentils, beans and grains.
iii. Consume more good protein foods, such as chicken and fish.

2. Weight issues.
Avoiding obesity is also a considerable factor for those who are prone to diabetes mellitus. Experts know that people who are heavy have a far larger chance of getting diabetes as it can cause insulin resistance.

3. Keep Fit.
Most experts think that those who have a regular exercise program have a much lowered chance of getting type two diabetes. For more information, take a look at : diabetes explained , where they go into the beneficial effects of frequent exercise in some detail.

4. Smoking and Drinking
Smoking and drinking alcohol are also extremely hazardous for those who are prone to diabetes mellitus. It is not that cigarettes and alcohol cause diabetes, but that they can damage the same parts of the body that diabetes does.
